The STRAND (Screening Tool foR ADHD iN intellectual Disability) Study

There is only one diagnostic tool for diagnosing ADHD in people with ID- the Diagnostic Interview for ADHD in Adults with ID (DIVA-5-ID). This tool is based on the DSM-5 criteria for ADHD and provides examples from clinical practice for both current and childhood behaviour in people with ID for each of the 18 symptom criteria for ADHD. Due to its thoroughness, the DIVA-5’s length and complexity can be particularly challenging for individuals with ID while also requiring significant resources and time by clinicians engaged with it (approximately 2 hours). Thus, a more efficient way, i.e., a screening tool prior to a full diagnostic assessment, is needed. While screening tools, by definition, do not offer a definitive diagnosis, they help to focus health resources on a smaller group that passes a threshold for more detailed diagnostic assessment. The STRAND study examines the reliability, validity, sensitivity, and specificity of a new 10 item ADHD screening tool in adults with ID.
