RADiANT convenor and consultant psychiatrist, Professor Regi Alexander was one among six experienced NHS consultants who spoke to a group of about 60 A-level students preparing for interviews to enter medical school in the UK. The on-line event on 16 November 2025, organised by Educate The World was chaired by Dr Ezhil Anand, Consultant Psychiatrist in Bradford. Professor Alexander’s talk traced the evolution of the NHS from its roots in the Beveridge report of 1942 through to the Medical Training Review of 2025 from NHS England. It described William Beveridge’s proposed solution in 1942 for the 5 malevolent giants on the path to reconstruction, the subsequent establishment of the NHS in 1948, the NHS’s genius for evolution and its changes over time from dental and optician charges all the way to the introduction of physician assistants and associates and the medical training review of 2025. His message focused on the need to remember that medicine, at its core, was not a mere collection of skills but a rigorous academic pursuit. As always, there would be dark clouds on the horizon and yet, a career in medicine offered a chance to be part of the deep and abiding relationship of trust between patient and doctor. Describing the talk as inspirational, Dr Anand urged those who attended, to pay heed to its central messages. A video of the talk is available.
